Food on Friday: Try some chai

Ice_Cream_Here

By Julia Westhoff

We’re having Indian tonight for our monthly dinner club, so I grabbed the opportunity to make one of my favorite desserts, chai ice cream. It combines all of those wonderful chai spices – cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, cloves, and black pepper with cool, creamy ice cream. Ever since I first tried it at the Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco I’ve searched for it in vain. Eventually I found this recipe and now I make it several times a year. Sometimes I add a little chocolate to the mix. Tonight I’m going all out and serving it with donut holes because…well…why not?

This recipe calls for several spices that can be difficult to find, such as cardamom pods and coriander seeds. I can’t be bothered with those fancy-schmancy ingredients – in my experience the ground stuff works just fine. Do look for the star anise though – it’s distinct flavor is vital to this special dessert.

Enjoy! Recipe’s here.
