Prairie Village the ‘richest town’ in Kansas? So says 24/7 Wall St.

Despite what you might have read on the internet, Mission Hills — and not Prairie Village — is the richest town in Kansas.
Despite what you might have read on the internet, Mission Hills — and not Prairie Village — is the richest town in Kansas.

A recent list of the “richest towns in America” has some northeast Johnson County residents scratching their heads.

24/7 Wall St.’s state-by-state list of the most well-heeled burgs in the country lists Prairie Village as the richest town in Kansas, as it has a median household income of $80,862.

The website says it “reviewed median household incomes for every town with a population of 25,000 or less in each state from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS)” to arrive at its results.

But while PV’s $80,862 median household income is certainly relatively affluent, it’s nowhere near the $226,250 in neighboring Mission Hills.

In fact Westwood Hills ($128,194), Fairway ($106,071) and Mission Woods ($135,625), all have populations under 25,000 and higher median household incomes than Prairie Village, as well.

So, is Prairie Village the richest town in Kansas? Perhaps in spirit, but not in financial terms.
