New rankings put 21 Shawnee Mission elementaries among top 100 in metro — but just 1 among top 25

Briarwood Elementary was ranked 40th overall in Niche's list.

Shawnee Mission School District elementaries fared relatively well compared to other Kansas City metro districts in Niche’s 2017 Public Elementary Schools Rankings. But Shawnee Mission schools lagged far behind their counterparts from the Blue Valley district for spaces among the top 25.

The website uses a combination of factors including student proficiency on academic tests, culture and diversity, and teacher performance to come up with its elementary school rankings each year. Among the top 25 schools in the 2017 rankings for the metro, just one Shawnee Mission school— Bluejacket-Flint in Shawnee, which feeds into SM North — made the cut, coming in at number 19. Twenty of the top 25 elementary schools are in the Blue Valley School District. Four are in the Blue Springs R-IV School District.

In addition to Bluejacket-Flint, the Shawnee Mission Elementaries that made the list are:

  • Mill Creek (#36)
  • Ray Marsh (#37)
  • Briarwood (#40)
  • John Diemer (#48)
  • Westwood View (#52)
  • Highlands (#53)
  • Oak Park Carpenter (#54)
  • Corinth (#56)
  • Brookwood (#59)
