Fairway Ward 4 city council applications due Friday. The City of Fairway has a City Council position open in Ward 4. The position is a 4-year term expiring January 2020. Regular meetings of the City Council are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m Interested persons who are residents of Ward 4 are asked to submit an Indication of Interest Form to City Hall, by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 31. The Search Committee will review the interest forms and if necessary interviews will be held prior to the April 10 City Council Meeting.
District Attorney warns about IRS scams. As the tax filing deadline nears, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe is warning residents to be alert for bogus phone calls and e-mails that appear to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Scammers impersonating IRS representatives often call residents about delinquent tax bills that are falsely owed. The District Attorney’s Office reminds residents that legitimate government entities will not call or e-mail asking for your personal information, nor will they contact you via social media. Fraudsters can make legitimate numbers appear on your Caller ID and use phishing e-mails to trick you into thinking legitimate agencies are contacting you when they are not. In addition, the IRS will not threaten taxpayers with lawsuits or jail time.
Mission police conduct DUI patrol Friday. Mission police will be conducting a state-sponsored DUI Saturation Patrol from 10:45 p.m. Friday night to 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The focus of the Saturation Patrol is to deter and apprehend impaired drivers who are operating under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. All officers participating in the saturation patrol are trained in DUI detection. Their patrol vehicles will display a “DUI Task Force” magnet on the door.
Democrats to hold legislative forum. Six Johnson County Democratic state legislators will appear in a forum at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sylvester Powell Community Center in Mission. This is likely to be the last full delegation forum for this session.
Shawnee Mission East grad named to All-American Team. Middlebury College women’s hockey player Jessica Young of Mission Hills has been named second-team CCM All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association (ACHA). Young was tabbed as a forward. Young, a three-time All-NESCAC honoree and 2015 Rookie of the Year, led the conference in scoring with a career-high 36 points on 16 goals and 20 assists. The junior paced the NESCAC in assists and ranked second in goals. Young is a 2014 graduate of SM East.
KC SuperStar auditions start today. Kansas City’s own version of “The Voice” – KC SuperStar – will hold preliminary auditions on this today from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the search to find the top high school singer. Auditions are being held at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th St., in Overland Park. Sponsored by the Jewish Community Center, the competition is open to any area high school singer. The top prize is a $10,000 scholarship with additional prizes for other finalists.
The finals will be held Aug. 27 at Yardley Hall.
Roeland Park City Council accepts branding report. A branding report containing potential new logos and marketing plans for the City of Roeland Park was accepted last week with a vote of 7-1. Councilmember Becky Fast voted against the measure. Councilors emphasized that while they were approving the report they were not necessarily going to take action on any one part of the report. The marketing proposal was produced by Benedictine College students and their professors. The council awarded a largely pro-bono contract to the college in May 2016. Fast said she would like Benedictine to remove the logos from the report so councilmembers could continue their discussion on those items separately. No one seconded Fast’s motion. Councilmember Michael Poppa said he expected the council to use the design concepts as starting point for future branding efforts.“This is going to be a guideline for us,” he said.
