School district closes offices on account of weather, city road crews gear up to treat slippery roads. The thin layer of ice that greeted Shawnee Mission area residents when they woke up this morning has prompted the Shawnee Mission School District to close school buildings and administrative offices today. There was no class for Shawnee Mission students today for a Professional Learning Day for teachers. Teachers have been asked not to report to their buildings. “Essential personnel will report as scheduled. 12-month employees will report when and if they feel it’s safe to travel,” reads a message from the district. “The CAA, Fitness Center, and PriorityOne Health Center will remain open.” Meanwhile, cities are preparing for what could be a challenging road-treatment task. “Crews arrived at 4 a.m., ready to treat roads,” Overland Park tweeted. “However, ground temps remain above freezing. Rain is expected to begin falling around morning rush hour, which will wash away any treatment. Rain is expected into the afternoon with temps falling.”
