Best Bets for the Weekend: A birthday party for a pool, young makers and a moonlit bike ride

Enjoy some really fun celebrations this weekend in Northeast Johnson County:

  • Today marks the 50th anniversary of Young’s Pool in Overland Park. Naturally, a birthday party is in order. Young’s Pool opened in 1968 and was the first pool Overland Park ever built. Events include a Dunk Tank, Balloon Animals, a Photo Booth, a DJ and more.
  • If you’ve got any young makers in your life, tonight is the night to check out the MakerSpace Passport Program to learn about learn about Maker ideas, tools and skills. Each week the Makers present a new project. Complete a series of different weekly projects using a variety of materials and methods. This is an open, walk-in program. Pick up a Summer MakerSpace Passport and get it stamped after each workshop. Kids who complete one of each week’s activities will be entered in a Grand Prize drawing. Best for ages 6-12, no grown-ups allowed! Supplies provided.
  • Friday night bring the family to view one of the best summer movies of all time, Grease. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic and get your music on with some of the greatest musical films from your childhood. Live Local Music concerts kick off each showing. Music starts at 8 pm, movie starts at dusk. This Movie in the Park is showing at two locations: Electric Park in Lenexa and Santa Fe Commons Park in Overland Park.

  • Late on Saturday night head to Lenexa for the Moonlight Bike Ride. Enjoy a 9-mile, closed-course bike ride down 95th Street from Old Town Lenexa through the Meritex caves. Decorate your bicycle in lights, participate in the “Light the Night” contest and grab a bite to eat at the pancake feed after the ride for a $6 donation.
