Leawood considers up to $6M in improvements to Ironhorse Golf Club

During a special work session Monday, the Leawood City Council discussed its capital improvement plan for the city’s Ironhorse Golf Club.

Why now: The club, located at 15400 Mission Rd., is nearly 40 years old and some of it elements, including bridges and a pump station are in need of repairs.

The club’s capital improvement plan includes more than $6 million of proposed work that would come out of city funds over the next 10 years if approved by the city council.

None of the suggested projects can be officially approved until the council meets for its annual budget meeting in June.

However, the governing body reviewed some of the possible near-future plans for Ironhorse at Monday’s meeting.

Here are some of the biggest ticket items currently being proposed for the 2022-2032 duration:

Pump station restoration

  • Project type: replacement
  • Details: Officials say the entirety of the golf course’s pump station, which pumps water from a nearby river onto the golf course, is in need of replacement. The electronic components of the pumps are showing wear and tear as the equipment is original to the golf course, which opened 28 years ago.
  • Start date: 2022
  • Price: $160,000

Bridge repairs

  • Project type: improvement
  • Details: A total of five bridges along the golf course are in critical need of repair, according to a 2020 inspection. Over the years, these bridges have settled and experienced erosion caused by the surrounding creek during storms.
  • Start date: 2022
  • Price: $75,000

Silt removal

  • Project type: improvement
  • Details: Silt, dust-like sediment that is carried by running water, has built up in the creek near hole three on the east side of Mission Road. The material has been unintentionally deposited in the water over the years due to neighboring construction.
  • Start date: 2023
  • Price: $120,000

Storage facility

  • Project type: addition
  • Details: Presently, roughly $800,000 worth of equipment at Ironhorse sits outside because the course has outgrown its current storage facility. The facility is looking to build a 8,000-square-foot, cold-storage facility on the north side of the property to house the excess equipment.
  • Start date: 2023
  • Price: $900,000

Pond erosion

  • Project type: improvement
  • Details: A bank restoration along the pond on hole six is needed as the area has eroded over the years. For now, a temporary rock wall has been installed along the pond to help mitigate the issues caused by the erosion.
  • Start date: 2024
  • Price: $100,000
