Tay’s Burger Shack closes Overland Park location, citing ‘severe staff shortage’

After being in business for two years, Tay’s Burger Shack permanently closed its Overland Park location.

When and where? Located at 7724 W. 151st St., the restaurant cited a shortage in staff and management as the reason for closing. The restaurant permanently closed Friday, July 15 on Facebook.

Key quote: “We are very sad to announce that effective immediately, our Overland Park location will no longer be doing business,” staff wrote. “Due to the hard time a lot of us our facing finding staff, we have ran into a severe staff and management shortage.”

More details: The post, which has now generated dozens of comments and shares from former customers, goes on to say the company is turning its focus to its other locations in the Kansas City metro.

  • In April, the restaurant opened Tay’s Cheesesteaks at 315 Armour Road in North Kansas City. It is a one minute drive from the original Tay’s Burger Shack, which the company said they plan to keep in operation.
  • Tay’s opened its Overland Park location in 2020, just days before the restaurant was forced to move to a carryout-only format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Since opening two years ago, the restaurant said its Overland Park location has been primarily run by high school students, many of whom are now going off to college.

Bigger picture: Tay’s is not the only the restaurant to struggle with finding staff since the start of the pandemic.

  • The restaurant industry is still down 750,000 – roughly 6.1% of its workforce – from pre-pandemic levels as of May, according to the National Restaurant Association.
