Overland Park native and former Blue Valley Northwest soccer standout Cece Kizer is staying with her hometown club.
Driving the news: The Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League announced Tuesday that forward Kizer had signed a new two-year contract extension through the 2024 season.
Key quote: “We are very excited to sign Cece to this new contract,” general manager Camille Levin Ashton said in a statement. “Her positive attitude, perseverance and love of Kansas City are just a few reasons she has excelled with this team.”
Background: Before beginning her collegiate career at the University of Mississippi, Kizer helped Blue Valley Northwest win three straight Kansas Class 6A state titles between 2013 and 2015.
- In her vaunted high school career as a Husky, Kizer scored 63 goals with 41 assists.
- While attending Ole Miss on scholarship, Kizer set more records for career goals with 48 and total points with 119.
What else: She was originally drafted into the NWSL in 2019 by the Houston Dash, who selected her with the 13th overall pick.
- In the 2021 expansion draft, Kizer was the fourth pick by Racing Louisville, where she scored the club’s first ever goal in April of last year.

Cece Kizer and the KC Current
The Current acquired Kizer along with fellow Kansas City area native Addisyn Merrick, a Lee’s Summit North graduate, in a June trade with Racing Louisville earlier this year.
- Kizer played a pivotal role helping spark the team’s midseason run of 13 unbeaten matches.
- In her brief stint with her hometown team, she scored a club-record seven goals from the run of play.
- Kizer started in 14 of 15 matches since joining the Kansas City team.
What they’re saying: “She was a big part of this club’s success after coming over in June and we look forward to her helping to lead this team in the future,” Ashton said.
