Whataburger owned in part by Patrick Mahomes opens in Overland Park

Whataburger’s newest Johnson County location, which is partially owned by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has officially opened in south Overland Park.

Driving the news: Located at 11300 Nall Ave., the San Antonio-based burger chain, opened its doors for the first time Monday.

  • The 3,800-square-foot restaurant will be the newest addition to the Galleria 115 site, which is planned as a mixed-use development that already includes apartments.
  • Plans to construct the Whataburger building were approved by the Overland Park Planning Commission in September 2021.

You may recall: The new franchise is owned by KMO Burger, a group that includes Mahomes as a partner.

Bigger picture: KMO Burger plans to open 30 Whataburgers over the next seven years in multiple cities across Kansas and Missouri, according to a press release.

  • The group opened its first Kansas City metro location in June at 10780 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kan.
  • “As part of KMO Burger, I am excited our team is opening our first location in Kansas City,” Mahomes previously said in a statement. “It’s great to bring a gift from my first home to my second home.”

Other locations: According to company officials, three other Johnson County locations are looking to open in 2023, with specific dates set to be released closer to their openings, including at:

  • 7791 W. 159th St., Overland Park
  • 9505 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • 14123 W. 135th St., Olathe

135th Street Whataburger opens

Whataburger’s first Johnson County location, which is not owned by KMO Burger, opened in March at 8430 W. 135th St. in Overland Park, where the Salty Iguana restaurant used to be

  • Hundreds of people filed in and out throughout the restaurant’s opening day.
  • The 135th Street location was the third Whataburger to open in the Kansas City area, following openings last year in Lee’s Summit and Independence, Mo.
