Lenexa man charged in deadly wrong-way crash on I-435

A Lenexa man has been charged with second degree murder in a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 435 in Overland Park last month.

Matthew Ryan, 31 is also charged with DUI manslaughter, a felony.

The crash killed a Missouri man

  • The crash occurred late on Saturday, Dec. 10, on I-435 near Metcalf Avenue.
  • Karl Wurtenberger, 42 of Independence, Mo., was killed.
  • A third vehicle was struck but police say the driver of that vehicle was not injured.

Multiple callers saw a truck driving the wrong way on I-435

  • Overland Park Police responded just after 11:30 p.m. that night to multiple calls of a truck driving westbound on the eastbound side of the highway.
  • An officer arrived on the scene at 11:35 p.m. to report a three-vehicle crash with one person deceased.
  • Two other people were transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center that night, one in serious condition, the other in stable condition.

Ryan’s first court appearance is Wednesday

  • Ryan is currently being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
