Leawood one of wealthiest cities in U.S., Census data shows

Recent census data shows Leawood to be among the wealthiest in the country.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released a report illustrating the wealthiest municipalities in the United States as of 2020. The bureau released the data in its American Community Survey, which gathers and offers national data on population demographics and housing.

The report names Leawood as the 41st wealthiest city in the United States.

Leawood’s median household income is higher than the average American’s household income

  • Recent census shows a median income of $71,186 for the average American household.
  • In contrast, the median income for a Leawood household was $159,540.
  • The same data set showed a poverty rate of 2% for the city.

Leawood’s education levels also top the national average

  • In Leawood, roughly 99% of residents have high school graduate degrees.
  • The most recent data shows roughly 75% of Leawood residents have Bachelor’s degrees or higher.
  • A 2021 Census report showed roughly 38% of adults older than 25 had Bachelor’s degrees in the United States.

Johnson County also has a high average income

  • Johnson County’s most recently recorded median household income was $96,059.
  • That amounts to nearly $25,000 more than the national average.
  • Census data from 2020 named Johnson County as the country’s 80th wealthiest county.
