Overland Park’s newest Whole Foods location near 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue has pushed back its opening date due to supply chain issues.
The new 45,000-square-foot grocery store, which will anchor the redevelopment at Overland Crossing, is now eyeing an early September/Labor Day opening, said Legacy Development Vice President of Development Dave Claflin.
Whole Foods still needs equipment for electricity control system
- The grocery store has delayed opening because it still needs switchgear equipment, which is part of the electricity control system at the center of every building. Orders for this type of equipment has been backlogged for the past two to three years.
- Materials for switchgear equipment are also used in auto production, so the two industries are competing for them, resulting in shortages.
The store is relocating from The Fountain shopping center
- Whole Foods currently operates a store in The Fountain shopping center, one block east from Overland Crossing at 119th and Glenwood.
- That store will close and relocate to Overland Crossing once the development is complete.
- In August 2021, the Overland Park Planning Commission unanimously approved a final development plan for the new store.

Several new tenants are coming to Overland Crossing
- Discount department store chain Nordstrom Rack recently announced it plans to open a new 27,000-square-foot location at the center this fall.
- In October 2022, the commission also approved plans for drive-thru coffee shop 151 Coffee and golf simulator company G Fairways to come to the shopping center.
- Most recently, outdoor apparel and accessory brand 5.11 Tactical and discount retail chain Five Below have opened at the center.
