? One thing to know today

Jiya Bhavsar, a fourth grader at Briarwood Elementary in Prairie Village, is the 2023 Johnson County Spelling Bee champion.

The bee was held last Saturday at Woodland Spring Middle School in Spring Hill and featured 79 student spellers.

Bhavsar won on the word “netizen,” after 38 rounds in the championship session, according to event organizers.

Another Shawnee Mission student, Mira McInnes of Indian Hills Middle School, came in second.

Bhavsar is the younger sister of former two-time county spelling bee champion Ishya Bhavsar, who advanced all the way to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2021.

Jiya Bhavsar will now represent Johnson County at the Sunflower State Spelling Bee, which will be held in Wichita this year on March 25.
