? One thing to know today

Nearly two years and 1,500 miles later, a cat that was reported missing in Miami, Fla., turned up in Prairie Village last week.

Prairie Village Police say a resident called, saying an orange tabby cat was trying to get into her home near 75th and Windsor.

When animal control officers scanned the cat for an implanted microchip, they discovered it was owned by someone in Miami.

The cat, it turns out, had been reported missing in June 2021.

According to Sgt. Josh Putthoff with Prairie Village Police, the cat appeared to be healthy and in “good shape.”

Now, Great Plains SPCA in Merriam is working to reunite the cat with its owner.

Police don’t know how the cat got here, but Putthoff says the microchip was key in getting it back to where it belongs. He encourages pet owners to get their pets microchipped and keep the data linked to that microchip current.

“If every pet owner would do that, we wouldn’t have to impound animals,” he said.
