A new microbrewery has achieved a crucial first step in its plan to open a new location in Overland Park.
The Overland Park Planning Commission on Monday unanimously approved Discourse Brewing for a 10-year special use permit that would allow the microbrewery to operate at 7211 W. 97th St. in Windmill Square.
The 2,900-square-foot space will be completely remodeled
- Discourse Brewing plans to remodel and repurpose a building previously used by an insurance agency.
- At the front of the brewery space, 1,100 square feet of the building is set to be converted into a tap room with a bar for patrons to enjoy the locally made beer.
- The back half of the space will be converted into a brewhouse with a covered outdoor patio space along the east side of the building.
- Prior to construction beginning for Discourse Brewing, the Overland Park City Council will have to approve the special use permit at its upcoming March 6 meeting.

Customers will be able to see how beer is made
- In addition to enjoying beer, patrons will have views into the production area of the facility in order to see how beer is made at Discourse Brewing.
- The brewhouse will function as a place for beer production, canning and distribution, said owner Matt Britton, who previously crafted beer at Bottlenose Brewing in Jacksonville, Florida.
- “I really like this location for a microbrewery. I think it’s dynamite,” said Commissioner Ned Reitzes. “Not only will it give some more life to Windmill Square, but you could have your sample brew and then head down the driveway to Jack Stack for barbecue.”
This would be Overland Park’s third brewery
- In November 2021, Overland Park approved a special use permit for Kansas City’s Stockyards Brewing Co. to open a brewery near West 103rd Street and U.S. 69 Highway.
- Overland Park has also housed Brew Lab at 7925 Marty St. since it opened in 2013.
