Boutique confection company Kate Smith Soirée officially opened a new bakery in downtown Overland Park last week.

For its second Johnson County location, Kate Smith Soirée took over the space formerly occupied by Clock Tower Bakery at 7911 Santa Fe Drive, next door to Big Dave’s Downtown Liquor. Kate Smith opened her first storefront in June 2019 in the Lenexa Public Market, eventually expanding beyond baking with Butterfield’s Bakery & Market.

The bakery specializes in macarons and custom cakes

  • In addition to macarons and cakes, the bakery has a pastry selection that rotates daily, which includes quiche and other sweet treats.
  • Kate Smith Soirée has also partnered with Savoy Tea and All The Love Roasting Co. by Martin City Brewing for its drink selection.
  • “This has been a huge dream of mine and I want to cry my heart out because I’m so proud of this team and proud of myself for turning this space around in less than 2 months,” owner Kate Smith wrote on Facebook.

Smith grew up working in her family’s restaurant

  • She received a hospitality management degree from Oklahoma State University in 2017 before studying Culinary Arts and Pastry in Florence, Italy.
  • “It was there that I fell in love with French Macarons and made it my mission to bring that authentic quality to the Heartland of the USA,” Smith said.

Clock Tower Bakery closed last December

  • In late 2022, the owners took to social media to announce they were closing the bakery in order to retire.
  • Known for its housemade pasties and English-style afternoon tea parties, Clock Tower had occupied the space along Santa Fe Drive since it first opened in 2009.
