Blue Valley North varsity swimmers win state championship

Blue Valley North High’s varsity swimmers took home a state championship title last weekend. 

The boys’ varsity team won the Kansas Class 6A boys swimming team title — the team’s first state title since 2014. 

The team scored 268 points in total

  • Initially, Blue Valley Northwest High came out in the top slot after the 200-yard relay race. 
  • By the end of the 12th race — the 400-yard freestyle relay — Blue Valley North surpassed Blue Valley Northwest’s score by 43 points.
  • In the final 200-yard individual medley swim-off, Blue Valley North junior Klein McGraw also beat his opponent at Topeka-Washburn Rural High.

Individual BV North swimmers scored highly too 

  • The team’s total 268 included combined points from all races. 
  • BV North senior Michael Mayo came in first for the 400-yard freestyle relay race. 
  • This was the race that pushed the team past Shawnee Mission East.  

Other Blue Valley area schools took home high scores 

  • Shawnee Mission East High came in second with 252 points.
  • Blue Valley Northwest High took third with 225 points. 
  • The top five ultimately included three Blue Valley high schools, with Blue Valley West High coming in fifth with 193 points.
