Overland Park opening all 4 outdoor pools this summer

Overland Park plans to open all four of its outdoor pools for the 2023 swim season, according to city officials.

This marks the first time since summer 2019 that Stonegate Pool, the Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center, Young’s Pool and Bluejacket Pool will be open for the summer.

Bluejacket Pool closed two summers ago due to a lifeguard shortage, and the city closed all city pools in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city is pushing to recruit more lifeguards

  • Earlier this month, the Overland Park Parks and Recreation Department announced that the city’s lifeguard pay increased to $15 an hour.
  • “Through aggressive retention efforts and the increase, the aquatics team has staffed many of the City’s 300-plus lifeguard openings,” the city said in a statement.
  • Parks and recreation officials have been recruiting outdoor pool staff throughout the winter season, according to city officials.

Marty Pool remains permanently closed

  • The city decommissioned Marty Pool last year with the long-term plan of eventually converting the site into a city park.
  • The former pool site is temporarily being used to house Fire Station #41 as its building near West 75th and Conser streets is undergoing a remodel.

The outdoor pool season opens May 28

  • Memberships, which provide guests access to all outdoor city pools, will be available for purchase in-person at the city’s community centers beginning March 22.
  • Annual membership options include family, adult, youth and senior memberships.
  • Daily admission to the pools last year cost Overland Park residents $6 and non-residents $7.
