Flying Cow Gelato moves into downtown Shawnee after ice cream shop closes

Flying Cow Gelato based in Westwood Hills plans to open a second Johnson County shop in the former Aunt Jean’s Cup and Cone storefront in downtown Shawnee later this spring.

“I love downtown Shawnee,” Flying Cow owner Sheri Weedman told the Post. “It just has a nice family vibe to it, and I just wanted to be part of that.”

The menu should include some local favorites

  • Popular items from the Westwood Hills store will also be on the menu in Shawnee, Weedman said, including their pistachio and a variety of chocolate flavors.
  • Though gelato will be the focus, she also expects there to be a few “confectionery twists,” like candied nuts, caramels, toffee and, of course, chocolates.
  • That includes kids’ menu items, like the dirt and dino sundae, which is served with a chocolate dinosaur made with Annedore’s chocolate.
  • Flying Cow in Westwood Hills also serves dairy-free sorbets.

The Shawnee location hopes to open in May

  • Weedman hadn’t initially planned to open another Flying Cow location, but heard earlier this year that Aunt Jean’s in Shawnee was planning to close.
  • In the past, Flying Cow has made trays of gelato on and off for Aunt Jean’s.
  • Since then, Aunt Jean’s has permanently closed, but the Post could not reach the former shop’s owner for comment for this story.

Weedman said a downtown Shawnee expansion made sense

  • Weedman said opening a new gelato shop on Johnson Drive, where people are already used to ordering frozen treats and so near to the chocolate production facility, just “made sense.”
  • Plus, the space already has what she calls “a charming patio.”
  • “I’m super excited to have a gelato concept there, and I’m passionate about making authentic gelato,” she said.
