Multiple people were arrested following a domestic disturbance at an Overland Park apartment complex Thursday night that drew a large law enforcement presence to the area around 89th Street and Metcalf Avenue.
Overland Park Police say one person was shot by a BB gun and two people were taken into custody.
Officers were initially dispatched just after 8 p.m. to the 8900 block of Metcalf, where an employee of a business reported hearing shouting and arguing from an apartment complex just to the east of the business.
As officers responded, another 911 call was received from someone involved in the disturbance.
That person gave the address of 8829 Broadmoor Street, in the Colonial Gardens Apartments just east of Metcalf Avenue.
Recorded radio traffic indicates that the first officer arrived at 8:21 p.m. and was flagged down by a woman claiming she had been shot.
Officer John Lacy, a spokesperson for Overland Park Police, says there was a domestic disturbance between a man and a woman.
The man’s sister got involved in the disturbance and shot her brother’s girlfriend with a BB gun, according to Lacy.
“Once we arrived and started to initiate several arrests of the family members, they became upset and resisted the officers on scene,” Lacy said.
According to recorded radio traffic, officers requested emergency backup at 8:27 p.m., sparking a countywide call for assistance.
That request prompted a response from law enforcement agencies as far away as Gardner, leading to numerous officers and patrol vehicles on scene.
By 8:32 p.m., officers reported that the scene was stable and two people had been detained. The call for assistance was then canceled.
The woman injured by the BB gun was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center by Johnson County Med-Act, with her injury described as a superficial wound.
No officers were injured.
