Johnson County is losing its last Bed Bath & Beyond store.
A bankruptcy filing from the New Jersey-based company will result in the closure of retail stores across the country — including Overland Park’s last Bed Bath and Beyond store near 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue.
The store won’t close right away
- The Overland Park store at 12035 Metcalf Ave. and the Buy Buy Baby store at nearby 12055 Metcalf Ave. will remain open as the “wind down” of operations begins this week, according to the most recent information posted on Bed Bath & Beyond’s website.
- The company gave no specifics on official closing dates of its stores, but closure sales begin this week and gift cards won’t be accepted after May 8.
- Closing sales will begin Wednesday, and all sales made on and after that day will be final.
The closings follow years of financial struggles
- When Bed Bath & Beyond began closing stores in 2020, the first closing in the Kansas City metro area was in Kansas City’s Northland.
- At the time, the company began the process of shuttering roughly 200 stores over the next two years.
- Bed Bath & Beyond has secured a $240 million loan to keep limited operations going while the company seeks a buyer.
Overland Park’s store was the last one in the Kansas City metro
- Earlier this year, Bed Bath & Beyond opted to keep open its southern Overland Park store.
- Instead, the company closed its Olathe store at 15335 W. 119th St., as well as its store at 15400 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee.
- In the wider Kansas City metro, Bed Bath & Beyond also had stores in Kansas City, Missouri, Lee’s Summit, and Independence.
