Ongoing work to expand a southern stretch of U.S. 69 Highway in Overland Park will soon result in lengthy nighttime road closures. The closures are part of a major overhaul project to build express toll lanes on the state’s busiest stretch of highway.
Starting May 1, 143rd Street will close to traffic at night to make way for construction on the U.S. 69 bridge over the road.

143rd Street will close five nights of the week
- A stretch of 143rd Street from Antioch Road to Metcalf Avenue will close underneath the highway overpass.
- This stretch of 143rd Street will close at 5 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, reopening at 6 a.m. the following day.
- The closure will last for three weeks.
- Drivers can use a detour to 151st Street between Antioch Road and Metcalf Avenue.
Highway nighttime lane closures will also continue
- Crews will also continue alternating northbound and southbound lane closures on U.S. 69 between 151st Street and Blue Valley Parkway for highway widening work.
- These closures begin at 5 p.m. each night and reopen at 6 a.m. the following day.
- The alternating lane closures will end May 22, pending the weather’s allowing of construction to finish on time.
Officials say nighttime closures are safer with less traffic
- In a recent project newsletter, officials said implementing closures at night allows for safer construction work and less interruption of traffic during the busier times of the day.
- Project night crews are currently in the process of installing drainage structures, completing grading and paving work, restoring the bridge, and installing a temporary barrier between Blue Valley Parkway and 143rd Street.
- Officials expect nighttime construction and resulting closures to continue through the summer, with more updates to come.
