A long-delayed project to repave a busy stretch of Mission Road in Prairie Village is finally set to happen this summer, which will likely lead to more traffic disruptions in the area.
The Prairie Village City Council last week unanimously approved an order greenlighting the work on Mission Road from 83rd to 95th streets.
That’s a stretch of Mission Road that’s already seen significant disruptions in recent months as utility Evergy has been working underground there to replace aging power lines.
Mission Road repaving was first approved in 2018
- The project first came up five years ago on the County Assistance Road Systems, or CARS, program which routinely helps cities pay for improvements to major arterial roads.
- But the start of work has been repeatedly delayed so both Johnson County Wastewater and, more recently, Evergy, could first do underground work in that area.
- The work being done in recent months by Evergy shut down southbound lanes of Mission Road and only wrapped up earlier in May.
- “We really appreciate that they do these before our projects, but it creates for long duration of work the last several years,” Bredehoeft said.

Utilities, cities, county will all share $835K cost
- According to city documents, Evergy will kick in the biggest share, more than $303,000 of the estimated total.
- Johnson County Wastewater will also contribute roughly $224,00 to the project.
- Prairie Village itself is expected to pay nearly $122,000, while the county will contribute $124,000 and Leawood will throw in roughly $62,000.
- “It’s a challenging project, it’s something that I’ve never seen before in Prairie Village, either,” Bredehoeft said, referring to the number of entities involved in paying for the work.
Next steps:
- Bredehoeft said the plan is for the repaving work to start the week after Memorial Day.
- This work will encompass repaving between 83rd and 95th streets, but he said the city will also tackle repaving Mission Road from 79th to 83rd in the future, as well.
- It’s unclear exactly how long this repaving project will take.
