Café Europa still wants to move to Leawood, just not where it originally planned

Café Europa, a Kansas City, Mo., bistro that got its start in Brookside, is relocating its flagship location to Johnson County — but not to where it originally planned.

The popular café and bakery announced this week on Facebook that while it still intends to move further south and across State Line, it will no longer open a new location at Leawood’s Town Center Crossing shopping complex.

Café Europa first formed plans to come to Leawood last year

  • The restaurant initially planned to move into a space at 4343 W. 119th St., on the east end of the south Leawood shopping center.
  • That space previously housed Zoe’s Kitchen and would have neighbored Fabletics and Evereve.
  • Previous plans for the Leawood restaurant included a full-service casual dining restaurant with a bakery and a grab-and-go market.

Owner is reportedly eyeing another Leawood spot

  • Owner Ben Cascio told the Kansas City Star that he is in early negotiations for the restaurant’s new Johnson County location.
  • That new location could instead open at Leawood’s Mission Farms shopping center at 3701 W. 106th St.
  • Cascio told the Star he is aiming for a late summer opening for a potential Mission Farms location.

Café Europa’s KCMO bistro has closed

  • Café Europa’s South Plaza location closed its doors Wednesday.
  • The restaurant only operated out of its South Plaza digs for less than a year.
  • It originally opened in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood in 2001 as “Europa! Café” before undergoing new ownership in 2016.
