Whole Foods opening delayed to November in Overland Park

The new Whole Foods Market near 119th and Metcalf in Overland Park has pushed back its opening date again.

The $12 million grocery store, which will anchor the massive redevelopment underway at Overland Crossing, is now looking to open in mid-November, two months behind schedule.

Legacy Development in January told the Post it planned to open the roughly 45,000-square-foot grocery store in early September — a delay from the grocery store’ original targeted opening of spring 2023.

Whole Foods officials wouldn’t confirm or deny Nov. 15 as a target date for opening the new store. Melissa Arnett, the store team lead at the current Overland Park location, did say that she and the team were getting excited about the pending move.

Whole Foods will still close its store down the street

Upon opening at 119th and Metcalf, Whole Foods will close its store down the street at The Fountains shopping center at 119th and Glenwood. That site will become home to a PGA Tour Superstore, with a targeted opening next year.

Officials with Luke Draily Construction confirmed to the Post that construction is about two weeks behind schedule, but the job could still be finished by Oct. 6, making the store ready for a planned mid-November opening. Luke Draily Senior Superintendent Rick Wantland said he is planning to add the necessary overtime work on Saturdays to get back on schedule.

“We’re rockin’ and rollin’ but it’s going to be difficult to make that date,” Wantland said. “We want it to be done on the 6th (of October), so they can begin stocking on the 9th. That’s still the plan.”

The new store will feel similar to the one in Olathe

Wantland said the store is a new prototype for Whole Foods, but shoppers can expect it to look and feel similar to the Olathe location at 119th Street and Blackbob Road. Opening in May 2015, it was the most recent Johnson County location to come online.

Approved by the city in August 2021, the relocated grocery store will occupy the corner where Porto do Sul, a Brazilian steakhouse, operated for five years before closing in June 2020.

Legacy Development still plans to open Nordstrom Rack by this fall as well.
