This Mission park is getting a brand new, $306K walking trail

Mission’s Broadmoor Park is on track to get a brand new walking trail later this year.

Located at 5701 Broadmoor Street, a full demolition and rebuild of the walking trails at the park is expected to cost the city $306,935. The city council will consider approval at a future meeting.

This is a longtime priority for the parks, rec and tree commission

  • The city began master planning improvements for each of its five major parks in 2019, said Penn Almoney, parks and recreation director.
  • About $2 million worth of conceptual plans for Broadmoor Park were ultimately approved, including a trail improvement for 2023, he said.
  • “Jumping into Broadmoor Park trail enhancement was part of an overall plan for us to make sure that each park within Mission felt renovated, rejuvenated and safe for all patron use,” Almoney said at the July 5 community development committee meeting.

The project increases the trail width by four feet

  • Trail improvements require the six-foot trail to be demolished, excavated and graded, Almoney said.
  • The trail will be replaced by a 10-foot wide concrete trail.
  • Gunter Construction Co., a Kansas City, Kan.-based company, is the company city staff recommended to hire for the project.
  • Work is expected to begin in September and be completed in January.

  • The $2 million for improvements is expected to result in a new protective seating for the baseball and softball field as well as fencing, restrooms, a shelter and playground equipment.
  • A multi-purpose court for sports like pickleball or basketball, native plantings and diversified tree species are also planned for Broadmoor Park.
  • All of these improvements would happen in the future in phases, according to city documents.
