Leawood PD clocks 17 damaged cars from widespread break-in

The Leawood Police Department is investigating widespread car break-ins in southern Leawood last week.

During the incident, 17 cars were damaged at a Leawood condominium complex near 119th and Roe.

The break-ins happened at the Tomahawk Creek Condominiums

  • Leawood Police Department officials said the break-ins occurred on Wednesday night and Thursday morning last week.
  • They occurred at Tomahawk Creek Condominiums, located at 115th Street and Town Center Drive, across the street from the Town Village of Leawood senior living community.
  • The damage ranged from small cracks in windows to fully broken-out ones.
  • Some paperwork was stolen from a few vehicles, but no major items — such as electronics or golf clubs — were stolen.

Police are still looking for leads

  • Any residents with information on the innocent are encouraged to email tips@leawood.org or call extension 309 at (913) 642-5555.
  • Leawood Police Capt. Brad Robbins said 17 exceeds the typical number of cars involved in a multiple-car break-in — the average is closer to four or five at a time.
  • “People are out a substantial amount of money replacing all those windows, and not to mention their sense of security is damaged,” he said. “And we’re left with not a lot to go on.”

Police say residents should take caution against break-ins

  • Robbins said the typical advice to avoid car break-ins is to keep all valuable items out of sight in cars, or to take them inside.
  • Remove items like money, electronic devices or expensive sunglasses from vehicles.
  • He said residents should also try to park in well lit areas at night.
