It’s Tuesday, Blue Valley!
Today’s forecast: Sunny and very hot. High: 97. Low: 80. Heat index: 101.
One thing to know today
Some Johnson County voters are going to the polls for primary elections Aug. 1, but there are no races on this ballot impacting the Blue Valley area.
The Aug. 1 election involves a handful of city council races (and one local school board runoff) impacting northeastern Johnson County and Olathe.
Still, residents in south Overland Park and Leawood will have plenty to vote on this November.
In Leawood, there will be a competitive contest to see who succeeds outgoing Mayor Peggy Dunn, who is stepping down after 25 years in office.
There will also be two contested races for Leawood City Council seats and two more where lone candidates face no challenger.
In Overland Park, all three city council seats that cover portions of the Blue Valley area will be on the ballot. Of those, two incumbent councilmembers — Faris Farassati and Scott Hamblin — are being challenged, and in a third ward, one candidate is running unopposed.
Finally, there are also four contested races for Blue Valley school board this November. In those races, the candidates have squared off into two informal slates with two very different priorities.
You can check out a list of candidates in the Blue Valley area on the ballot Nov. 7 at the Johnson County Election Office website here.

A thousand words
This blue heron was caught taking off near the 15th hole at St. Andrew’s Golf Course in Overland Park recently. As reader Michelle Keller, who submitted the photo, wrote: It “gives new meaning to the term ‘birdie.'”
