The downtown Shawnee branch of Commerce Bank will close and relocate its operations for now to another previously closed branch nearby.
The branch at 11000 Shawnee Mission Pkwy., at the corner with Nieman Road, is expected to close its doors at the end of the day on Friday, Aug. 18.
This branch is one of the first visible businesses in the downtown Shawnee area drivers coming from Shawnee Mission Parkway and is part of the gateway into the downtown business district.
Commerce Bank services at that branch will then be relocated nearby to Pflumm Road and Shawnee Mission Parkway.
Many unknowns about this closure remain
Kelly Collins, senior vice president and director of regional banking for Commerce Bank in Kansas City, told the Post in an emailed statement this is a “transition.”
She said it comes as the bank endeavors to “evaluate the feasibility of enhancements at the Nieman location.”
It is unclear if this closure is temporary or permanent.
It is also unclear what the timeline would be for any upgrades to the downtown Shawnee location and when patrons could expect to find out if or when the branch would reopen.
Commerce Bank officials declined to address those questions directly.

Shawnee customers received closure notice last month
- Patrons of the bank were sent letters in the mail alerting them to the closure in mid-July.
- The letter, shared with the Post, assured them that their accounts wouldn’t be affected by the move.
- It also called the move “short-term,” but the letter also lacked specifics on any timeline, as well.
Shawnee Commerce Bank moving down SM Parkway
- Commerce Bank services in Shawnee will resume at the start of the day on Monday, Aug. 21, Collins said.
- Those will now be carried out at a previously closed Commerce branch at 13501 Shawnee Mission Pkwy., at Pflumm Road.
- Collins said patrons could also use any of the other more than 40 Commerce Bank locations in the metro.
