Updated: Monday, Aug. 7 at 5:30 a.m.

A Fairway police officer remained hospitalized in critical condition following an exchange of gunfire Sunday morning at a QuikTrip gas station in Mission.

Two suspects were involved in the incident: one of them was killed, and the other was taken into custody.

Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect who was killed as Shannon Wayne Marshall, 40, of Ashland City, Tennessee.

A second suspect, identified as Andrea Rene Cothran, 32, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, has been booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in New Century.

In a statement issued Sunday evening, Fairway Police Chief J.P Thurlo said the officer was “shot and critically wounded [Sunday] while trying to make an arrest in a neighboring community. Upon hearing the call for assistance, our officer courageously and without hesitation responded to help.”

He said more information on the officer’s condition would be forthcoming.

“Tonight, I ask for thoughts and prayers for the officer and his family, and request privacy for the officer’s family and for the Fairway Police Department.”

Lenexa Police say a local police officer was shot, and one suspect was killed during a shootout on Sunday morning at a QuikTrip gas station off Interstate 35 in Mission.

It started with a stolen car report off 95th in Lenexa

In a news release, Master Police Officer Danny Chavez, a spokesperson for Lenexa Police, said officers responded to a report of a stolen car in the area of West 95th Street and I-35 at about 7:30 a.m.

“Lenexa officers located the stolen car nearby, and the suspect struck a Lenexa patrol car in the stolen car and fled,” Chavez said in the release. “Lenexa officers pursued the stolen car north on I-35 highway.”

That stolen car exited the interstate to Lamar Avenue in Mission.

Police say a suspect barricaded himself inside QuikTrip

Police say that’s when two suspects ran from the car and into a QuikTrip at 4700 Lamar Ave.

Recorded radio traffic indicates that at least one of the suspects barricaded himself inside the QuikTrip’s restroom.

“A contact team comprised of officers from multiple agencies went to arrest the suspects inside QuikTrip,” Chavez said in the release. “There was an exchange of gunfire as officers attempted to contact the suspects.”

At 7:57 a.m., recorded radio traffic captured the sound of gunfire with officers reporting “shots fired,” followed closely by officers reporting “officer down” and requesting an ambulance.

Chavez confirms one officer was shot in the exchange and transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area hospital.

That officer was later identified as a member of the Fairway Police Department.

An officer is in critical condition from a gunshot wound

A law enforcement source confirms to the Post that the injured officer is in critical condition with a single gunshot wound.

Chavez said one of the suspects was killed in the exchange of gunfire, and the other has been arrested.

“The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team, or OICIIT, has been assembled to investigate this incident, which is in the preliminary stages,” Chavez said. “The agencies involved in the incident are the Lenexa Police Department, Fairway Police Department, Mission Police Department, and the Kansas Highway Patrol.”

The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Tea was formerly known as the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team.

On Sunday, crime scene tape surrounds the Mission QuikTrip, but no roads in the area are closed.
