Changes are coming to Prairie Village’s Windsor Park near 71st and Mission.

The Prairie Village City Council on Monday unanimously approved nearly $450,000 worth of improvements for the park, 7200 Windsor St., largely to go toward electrical repairs and a new restroom.

The restroom project is years in the making

  • Ward 3 Councilmember Lauren Wolf said the restroom project “has been a topic of discussion for the [parks and recreation committee] for years.”
  • Wolf said this is also “the culmination of a journey” to get restrooms at every Prairie Village park that can house them.
  • Windsor Park is currently served by a portable toilet, according to the city’s website.
  • “Windsor Park is really the last park where it makes sense, so this is a very exciting moment — especially for Ward 3 residents,” Wolf said.

  • The city council, in a separate motion, approved a nearly $33,000 contract with Pro Electric L.C. to fix the electrical cables in an electrical box at the park.
  • City Engineer Melissa Prenger said “small animal activity” damaged the cables.
  • That led to all the connections in the box being overloaded or fried, she said.
  • Prenger said the work to fix the electrical cables will begin as soon as possible.

Quotes came back higher than anticipated

  • Prenger said the original, lowest quote for the restroom project alone was $416,000.
  • Prenger said the design of the restroom — which features a small shelter to provide a rest area near the front of the park — and associated materials led to the increased cost.
  • City staff made adjustments to concrete work on the restroom project to get the price tag down from $416,000 to $401,000, Prenger said.
  • An additional $45,000 is needed for construction and utility hookups, she said, as well as the necessary electrical repairs.
