What’s happening with first Popeyes in south Overland Park?

Share this story:

Late last year, plans for a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to open its first south Overland Park location at 7724 W. 151st St. started to take shape.

But as of early August, there have been no external signs of redevelopment at the site near U.S. Highway 69 for the fast food fried chicken restaurant.

The Popeyes brand communications team did not reply to the Post’s requests for comment on opening timelines or other plans pertaining to the new restaurant in south Overland Park.

Overland Park approved Popeyes plans in January

  • The plan, according to city documents, is to remodel the existing building and drive-thru to match Popeyes’ design standards.
  • Most upgrades are expected to focus on the exterior.
  • The single-lane drive-thru on the east side of the building will also be upgraded to have two lanes, making room for roughly 20 cars to queue up at a time.
  • The Overland Park Planning Commission approved the final development plan for the site as part of the consent agenda during the Jan. 9 meeting.

Future Popeyes building has previously housed restaurants

  • This building was previously home to a Kansas City-based Tay’s Burger Shack, which closed last year. Before that, it was a Hardee’s fast food restaurant.
  • This area was rezoned for office and business uses in the late 1980s.
