🚨 One thing to know
Two Johnson County schools took home state volleyball titles this past weekend, one a perennial power and the other a first-time champion.
Mill Valley defeated Blue Valley North in the Kansas Class 6A final Saturday in Salina to notch the Jaguars’ first-ever volleyball title, beating the Mustangs in straight sets 25-23, 25-19.
Meanwhile, in the Class 4A title match, Bishop Miege cruised past McPherson 25-12, 25-14 to win the Stags’ 28th overall volleyball state championship and third in the past four years.
In the 6A meetup between Mill Valley and BV North, it was the squads’ fourth meeting this year and the third time Mill Valley came out the winner.
The Jags were led on the court by senior Kaitlyn Burke and freshman Riley Riggs, according to KSHSAA Covered.
There was also a bit of history: Mill Valley coach Kylie Corneliusen at age 26 became the youngest ever coach to lead a team to a Kansas Class 6A volleyball title.
For Bishop Miege, it was a familiar end to an up-and-down season.
The Stags entered the postseason as the overall eighth seed and lost their opening match of state pool play before winning four in a row to earn another trophy.

📸 A thousand words
Reader Cynthia Robinson sent in this picture last week of a male monarch butterfly perched on a sunflower in Prairie Village, writing, “It is somewhat unusual to see a monarch this far north so late in the fall. Let’s hope the little guy makes it all the way home before cold weather.”
