Gearhead Outfitters, an Arkansas-based outdoor gear, equipment and clothing retailer, recently opened its newest shop in Oak Park Mall in Overland Park.
Located on the mall’s first floor near the Coach store and Lush Cosmetics, this is the brand’s first Kansas store and only one in the Kansas City area.
Gearhead’s arrival in the Kansas City market comes as Moosejaw, recently acquired by Dick’s Sporting Goods, prepares to close its Olathe store and Kansas City, Missouri, store in the new year.
Gearhead sells mostly outdoor, active brands
- Gearhead offers products from Hydro Flask, Nalgene, Adidas Outdoor, Smartwool, Birkenstock, Camelbak, Teva, Columbia, Thread, Yeti and Garmin.
- The store also has a wide selection of Patagonia items.
- “We’re really stoked to help people in any way, shape or form,” said Zach Arwood, the manager of the Oak Park Mall store, “whether that’d be getting a new pair of shoes or just talking about anything in between.”

Gearhead started as a bike shop
- The first store opened in 1997, growing out of a living room bike repair set up by founder Ted Herget who was operating with some friends.
- In 2019, Gearhead expanded, acquiring Tennessee-based Rock/Creek Outfitters.
- Today, there are several Gearhead stores in the U.S. The new Oak Park store is their 20th location.
- “We’re super stoked to be here, kind of get in front of a new clientele in a new market,” Arwood, the local manager, said.

Keep an eye out for Gearhead’s holiday deals
- Arwood said Gearhead will have a “12 Days of Christmas” promotion for the holidays this year.
- Gearhead will announce the deals and discounts offered through that promotion on the brand’s Instagram and other social media accounts.
