Leawood’s Park Place shopping center just lost a longtime restaurant tenant — but another is on the way.

Sunday marked the last day of business for fast-casual chain BurgerFi, which served as the only Johnson County location for the Florida-based company.

Kansas City-based chicken eatery Mother Clucker will soon take over its space, aiming for an end of summer opening, according to officials with real estate group CBRE.

Mother Clucker will operate at 11635 Ash St.

  • The restaurant will move into a space on the south side of Park Place, just off West 116th Place and Ash Street.
  • BurgerFi occupied that space for nearly a decade before closing this weekend.
  • Employees at BurgerFi could not provide a reason for the closure on Sunday.
  • Mother Clucker will also neighbor the Outta the Blue coffee shop, and the recently-opened upscale eatery Aqua Penny’s.

This marks Mother Clucker’s second JoCo location

  • The chicken joint opened its first Johnson County location in February 2023, in downtown Shawnee.
  • Across State Line, the eatery also operates its original location, a kiosk in the Parlor KC food hall in Kansas City”s Crossroads district.
  • Owned by restauranteurs and husband-and-wife duo Derrick and Kylie Foster, Mother Clucker is known for its Nashville-style hot chicken wings and sandwiches.
  • In addition to sandwiches, the eatery also offer items like French fries, salads, fried pickles and milkshakes.

Park Place has seen a lot of recent additions

  • BurgerFi’s departure and Mother Clucker’s arrival comes as the latest change at the Leawood shopping center.
  • Across the street, Aqua Penny’s — under the same ownership as nearby Thai eatery Bamboo Penny’s — opened its doors earlier this month.
  • Last winter, locally owned Lalli’s Boutique also opened its first location off West 116th Street.
  • Kansas City-based French bistro Aixois also plans to open its doors in the former Gordon Biersch brewery space later this summer.
