Consolidated Fire District No. 2 expanding Prairie Village station

Share this story:

The Consolidated Fire District No. 2 station in Prairie Village is growing.

Last week, the Prairie Village Planning Commission unanimously approved a site plan for an addition to the fire station off 63rd Street and Mission Road.

Located at 3921 W. 63rd St., the fire station is next door to Indian Hills Middle School and across the street from Trinity Anglican Church.

The site plan calls for 3,500 square foot addition

  • Consolidated Fire District No. 2 plans to build a 3,500 square foot addition on the east side of the existing building
  • Lindsay Tatro with SFS Architecture told the planning commission last week that design of the new addition will match the existing building.
  • The site plan also calls for an interior renovation of the building, which is almost 13,200 square feet total.

Office, bunk spaces included in addition

  • Tatro told the planning commission on Tuesday that the building addition and the interior renovations will result in expanded fire services.
  • Tatro said the addition itself is to the administration wing, supporting office space for an additional administrative staff member and a large conference room for public interactions.
  • The expansion will allow for additional bunk space during shifts, for up to 13 bunks, she said.
  • Additionally, the interior renovations will allow for expanded spaces for firefighters including expanded kitchen, dining day room and fitness spaces.

This plan triggers city’s tree protection ordinance

  • Chris Brewster, the city planner with Multistudio, told the planning commission that the site plan calls for the removal of some trees, triggering the city’s tree protection ordinance.
  • The fire district plans to put in more trees, he said, replacing more than the value of the trees that are planned for removal.
  • Specifically, the plan calls for one street tree per 40 feet, as well as a one-to-one removal and replacement of two existing trees, according to city documents.
