Overland Park Police are investigating a fiery crash that killed one driver and injured another late Sunday night.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 69 between 95th and 91st streets at about 11:40 p.m.
In a news release, Overland Park Police Capt. Jon-Eric Meyer said one driver was southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 when that vehicle hit a car driving in the correct direction head-on.
Recorded radio traffic from Overland Park firefighters stated that both vehicles sustained heavy damage from the impact and caught fire.
Police say the driver of the wrong-way vehicle died at the scene.
The driver of the car going the right way was transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act ambulance in stable condition.
“The Traffic Safety Unit is currently investigating the crash,” Meyer said in the release. “The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending proper notifications to next of kin.”
Police closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 at 95th Street for several hours as they investigated the crash.
