The Shawnee Mission Board of Education on Dec. 9 unanimously approved the calendar for the 2026-27 school year.
The calendar anticipates a last day of school no later than Memorial Day, said Darren Dennis, the district’s chief academic officer. “We have built in enough cushion that Memorial Day should be the last day even if we have multiple snow days,” he told board members.
Key dates on the 2026-27 calendar
Below are some highlights from the calendar:
- First day of class for grades 1-7 and 9 with early dismissal for grades 1-6: Wednesday, Aug. 12
- First day of class for grades 8, 10-12: Thursday, Aug. 13
- First day of class for Pre-K and Kindergarten: Friday, Aug. 14
- Thanksgiving: No school for all students the week of Nov. 23-27
- Winter break: No school for Pre-K and early dismissal K-12 on Friday, Dec. 18; No school for all grades Monday, Dec. 21 – Monday, Jan. 4.
- Spring break: No school Pre-K to 12 for a teacher workday Friday, March 12 followed by a one-week break March 15 – March 19
- Last Day Pre-K: Tuesday, May 25
- Last Day, K-11: Wednesday, May 26 with early dismissal
CLASS OF 2027 GRADUATION DATES
- Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission South will be on Tuesday, May 18
- Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West will be on Wednesday, May 19
- Horizons and Shawnee Mission Northwest will be on Thursday, May 20
