2025 Lenexa city council election primer

There are three contested races for Lenexa City Council seats this year, as well as a fourth uncontested race.

You can read the candidates’ responses to our questionnaire below and see video of the forum the Post held earlier this fall.

Candidates running unopposed were not asked to respond to the questionnaire or participate in the forum.

Ward 1

In Ward 1, current Councilmember John Michael Handley — appointed to the seat in January to fill a vacancy created by the death of Joe Karlin — faces a challenge from Joe Shull.

Handley and Shull earned more votes over Trevor Keegan during an August primary, so the two face off again in the November general election.

Ward 2

In Ward 2, Councilmember Bill Nicks is seeking his third term and will face a challenge from Nicole Wasson.

Ward 3

In Ward 3, sales manager Avery Bell and former councilmember Corey Hunt will face off in a contest for the seat currently held by Melanie Arroyo, who is not seeking reelection.

Ward 4

  • Current Councilmember Craig Denny, a former Shawnee Mission school board member, is seeking his second term and does not have an opponent.
