Overland Park home a ‘loss’ after weekend fire when owners were out of town

Overland Park Fire officials say a home heavily damaged by fire early Sunday morning is likely a complete loss.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which broke out a residence near 141st Street and Nieman Road overnight Sunday. The owners of the home were out of town at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

In a release, Jason Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Overland Park Fire Department, said fire crews from Leawood, Olathe and Overland Park were called to the home just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

“First units on the scene reported heavy fire from the roof of a two-story, single-family home,” Rhodes said in the release.

A passerby reported the fire, according to investigators. A neighbor told fire crews on the scene that the home’s owners were out of town at the time, Rhodes said.

After arriving, firefighters began attacking the fire, but crews observed that the fire had burned through the roof and there were holes developing in the flooring.

“Moments later, crews were withdrawn from the structure to begin a defensive fire attack,” Rhodes said.

All told, it took firefighters about two hours to bring the fire under control, Rhodes said.
