Dessert shop Sugar Llamas eyeing new Overland Park storefront

The new Overland Park store will serve as the Oklahoma-based company's debut in Johnson County.

A new “one-stop shop” for sweet treats, particularly cake doughnuts, is on its way to Johnson County.

Oklahoma-based Sugar Llamas has filed plans for a new store in Overland Park — its first in Johnson County.

Officials with the company’s local franchise group estimated the new shop will open this fall, with potentially more expansion to come later on in the Kansas City metro area.

Sugar Llamas is coming to 8971 Metcalf Ave.

  • The dessert shop is coming to a space just off 89th Street and Metcalf Avenue, at the Promontory shopping center.
  • There, it will neighbor Chinese restaurant Bo Lings at the shopping center.
  • The space has been vacant for several years, but it previously housed a hair salon.

Sugar Llamas serves mini doughnuts and other treats

  • The shop is primarily known for its mini doughnuts, which come in a variety of flavors — from chocolate strawberry and s’mores to “hazelnutty” (vanilla and hazelnut) and “boss hog” (maple and bacon).
  • In addition to doughnuts, the menu at Sugar Llamas also includes ice cream — either on its own or in treats like the “summit”, which comes with two scoops of ice cream and six mini doughnuts.
  • The shop also serves a variety of coffee drinks and flavored Red Bull mixers.

The Overland Park store also serves as the first in the wider Kansas City metro area for the Oklahoma-based company.

Sugar Llamas got its start in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2021, and since then, several Sugar Llamas shops have opened there — in addition to other states like Texas, Connecticut and Arkansas.

Further west, the company also has a shop in Wichita.

“Sugar Llamas is more than just a sweet treat destination — we’re a joyful fusion of mini donuts, craft coffee/drinks, and premium ice cream, all served in a welcoming, family-friendly environment,” said the local franchise group of the Oklahoma-based company via a statement. “Our mission is simple: to deliver moments of happiness, one donut and one smile at a time.”
