An Olathe man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after shooting a 21-year-old man to death in March.
On Monday in Johnson County District Court, Armando Javier Guerrero pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Landen Roggenkamp on March 29.
Judge Michael P. Joyce is presiding over the case.
The shooting started as an altercation
At about 9:45 p.m. on March 29, Olathe Police were called to a quadruplex residence in the 1400 block of East Mart-Way Circle, directly behind Washington Elementary School and Santa Fe Trail Middle School.
According to the affidavit, an unidentified person received a video call from Roggenkamp through Snapchat where he asked the person to come to Guerrero’s residence, where the two were residing together, because he needed help.
“(The person) also reported it was evident to him that both (Guerrero and Roggenkamp) were heavily intoxicated, slurring their words, and were emotional,” the affidavit stated.
In a later interview with police, Guerrero admitted each of them had three beers and one shot of Vodka, according to the affidavit.
At some point, the two got into an altercation and Guerrero shot Roggenkamp, Guerrero told police, according to the affidavit. Guerrero could not remember how many times he shot Roggenkamp because he said his memory was blacked out from the alcohol.
Guerrero fled the scene
When officers arrived, they found Roggenkamp suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, according to the affidavit.
Another unidentified person said they received a second call from Roggenkamp asking them to get to the apartment because he needed help.
When the person arrived, they saw Guerrero fleeing on foot and discovered Roggenkamp laying on his back in Guerrero’s bedroom.
Olathe Police performed a perimeter search of the Mart-Way Circle address for any potential suspects. They were assisted by a K-9 unit from the Lenexa Police Department.
Police were informed that Roggenkamp was at a residence on the property with Guerrero, who was known to carry a “Glock Model” handgun and a “Rambo style knife,” according to the affidavit.
An unidentified person told police that Guerrero had anger issues and struggles with anger management and “was known to be aggressive and combative with others,” according to the affidavit.
During the search, Olathe Police came into contact with Guerrero, noting he had blood on his clothing, then placed him under arrest at 10:16 p.m. and booked him into jail at the Johnson County Adult Detention Center at 7:04 a.m. on March 30.

Victim was “an incredible person”
Following Roggenkamp’s death, a GoFundMe campaign was launched that successfully raised more than $10,000 for his funeral.
In the comments of the fundraiser, people memorialized the 21-year-old man.
“It was a pleasure having him as part of the Hallbrook family. Our hearts are with his family and friends as we mourn the loss of an incredible person taken too soon,” a representative from the Hallbrook Country Club in Leawood wrote. “Thank you for sharing him with us over the years. Not only a great coworker, but also a great friend.”
On social media, his family mourned his loss.
“I have a hole in my heart that can never be filled. I would give anything to keep all of my kids safe and alive. I love you. I miss you so so so very much,” Jason Roggenkamp, Landen’s father, posted on Facebook.
