This year marks the 50th one that Mr. D’s Donuts has served up its breakfast confections in Shawnee.
For years, co-owner Johnny Chen said customers from all over Johnson County have made trips to the shop at 75th Street and Nieman Road on busy weekend mornings.
Though many of them live close by, several of them frequently make the drive from further south to grab doughnuts there. As such, Chen said, they’ve been wondering when that drive might become a little bit shorter.
Soon, the day that those customers have been asking for will finally come. The doughnut and coffee shop has a new southern Overland Park shop in the works. If all goes according to plan, then it will open next year.
Mr. D’s is coming to 14463 Metcalf Ave.
- The doughnut and coffee shop plans to open in a new space at the Lionsgate development, off 143rd Street and Metcalf Avenue.
- Pending city approvals, Chen said the new shop will likely open its doors in late summer or fall of 2026.
- Once it opens, the shop will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The shop will serve doughnuts, coffee and other sweets
Mr. D’s serves a wide variety of doughnuts, from cinnamon twists and apple fritters to mochi doughnuts (which come in multiple flavors like blackberry lemonade, banana split and strawberry funfetti).
Though the Overland Park shop will still be primarily focused on doughnuts, Chen said the menu there will also feature some pastries from Ibis Bakery as well as coffee drinks.
The new shop will also be equipped with a drive-thru, which is a first for Mr. D’s.
“It’s still going to be doughnut-forward, of course, but then we just kind of want to create more variety, or maybe have some different options for people,” Chen said. “We want to try to bring that convenience factor to the customer as well.”
This marks the third Mr. D’s shop in Johnson County
Chen and his wife, Boggie Ogtonbayer, took ownership of the doughnut shop from Chen’s godparents roughly six years ago.
In addition to the Shawnee flagship store, Mr. D’s also serves its doughnuts and coffee out of a stall in the Lenexa Public Market.
The new Overland Park shop will mark the farthest south in Johnson County that Mr. D’s has gone as of yet. As such, Chen said he’s looking forward to bringing the shop to a new batch of customers — as well as getting a bit closer to Mr. D’s regulars who live out south.
“I think that south Overland Park area — the 143rd and Metcalf area — doesn’t have a whole lot of that (local) café type of concept,” he said. “We just want to let (customers) know that, hey, we heard you, and we’re gonna make it happen.”
