Overland Park Police have identified a woman who died after being struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning.
The crash happened at about 3:29 a.m., in the 9400 block of Goddard Street.
In a news release, Officer John Lacy said a vehicle was eastbound on Goddard Street.
“The vehicle initially struck a parked vehicle on the westbound side of the road,” Lacy said. “[The vehicle] continued traveling eastbound and struck a pedestrian who was walking westbound on the edge of the roadway.”
In an updated statement sent later Tuesday afternoon, Lacy identified the pedestrian who was killed as Janet Dam, 68, of Overland Park.
After striking the parked vehicle and then Dam, the eastbound vehicle finally came to a stop after hitting a tree, Lacy said.
The parked car was hit head-on and sustained heavy damage.
Firefighters and paramedics pronounced Dam dead at the scene.
Dam was not carrying any identification when she was struck and police on Tuesday initially asked the public’s help in identifying her.
Police said at the time they believed the woman later identified as Dam lived in the area and walked daily at around 4 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle, only identified as a 26-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Recorded radio traffic stated that the man was being treated while in police custody.
Police have not indicated whether the man remains in custody.
Officers used crime scene tape to block off the street and numerous driveways as they investigated the crash.
Anyone who may be able to identify the woman or who has information about the incident is asked to contact the Overland Park Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 913-327-6731.
