Karats Jewelers reopening soon in new Overland Park space

The store will reopen later this year in a newly built space significantly larger than its former Overland Park home.

The beginning of the next chapter for a locally owned jeweler is officially in sight.

After breaking ground a year ago, construction on Karats Jewelers’ new Overland Park store is nearing completion.

Pending final touches to the new building, owner Akshay Anand said the store is on track to reopen in its new home in November.

Karats Jewelers moved to 12260 Blue Valley Parkway

  • The new roughly 20,000-square-foot retail building is on the northwest corner of 123rd Street and Blue Valley Parkway. near Target.
  • Previously, the store operated further south at 8651 W. 135th St.
  • Once the new store opens, its regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The new store will be larger with new inventory

Karats Jewelers is known, in part, for its extensive range of wrist watches. The new store will carry more than 30 brands of watches, to be exact.

The store is also known for its variety of engagement rings, which customers can either design on their own or choose from Karats’ selection.

Karats also offers other jewelry items like gemstone rings, diamond pendants, hoop earrings and anklets.

By moving from its former 135th Street store to the new headquarters, Karats will significantly grow — from a 5,000-square-foot store to a 20,000-square-foot store.

Anand said the new building off Blue Valley Parkway will allow Karats to widen its range of products — in terms of both new products and new featured designers, one of which will include California-based Tacori.

“With the amount of inventory that we carry, we wanted to just provide a better experience overall,” he said. “Customers are going to be able to choose from any price point that they want, whether they have a $500 budget or a $500,000 budget.”

Karats has been in Johnson County for 25 years

The Anand family’s roots in the jewelry industry go back six generations.

After the Anand family founded Karats Jewelers in India in the 1940s, Akshay Anand opened the brand’s first Overland Park location at 6912 W. 135th St. in 2000.

The store later moved to its second location at 8651 W. 135th St. in 2011, where it remained for nearly 15 years.

By giving the store a new home a bit further north than its former spot in Overland Park, Anand said the move will help continue to serve Karats’ existing customer base while making it a bit more central to other parts of Johnson County.

“(I’m excited for) the level of customer service and the selection that we can provide to our customers, and also that the new building will feature new designers that we did not have before,” he said.
