It’s Election Day in Johnson County!
From Shawnee to Spring Hill and from Olathe to Overland Park, voters will be electing officials to lead their most local (and we’d argue, most important) level of government.
There are contests for city council seats in more than a dozen Johnson County communities, contested races for seats on five local school boards and countywide votes for positions on the JCCC and WaterOne boards.
Possibly the most watched election is in Prairie Village, where six hotly contested races for city council have turned on the issue of a new city hall project. Voters there will also be voting on a ballot question over whether to “abandon” the city’s current form of government.
In Johnson County’s biggest city, Overland Park, there is also a mayoral contest between two rivals who faced each other in a mayoral primary four years ago, as well as six city council seats on the ballot.
There are also contested mayoral races in De Soto, Merriam, Mission Hills and Spring Hill, where two write-in candidates are hoping to help avoid a situation like one that threw the town into post-election chaos four years ago.
Wherever you’re voting, check out the primers the Johnson County Post has prepared so you can know which candidates in your communities align with your priorities.
