The incident took place Sunday night along I-35 in Merriam and involved what police described as a "rolling disturbance" going the wrong way on the highway.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office has charged a 21-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man with six felonies after he allegedly fired gunshots at another vehicle near Interstate 35 and 67th Street in Merriam over the weekend.

Javon D. Simmons was arrested by Merriam Police in the parking lot of Aristocrat Motors, along I-35, shortly after the incident late Sunday evening.

Simmons made his first court appearance in Johnson County on Tuesday afternoon to hear the slew of charges against him.

He has been charged with:

  • 2 counts of aggravated assault with the use of a deadly weapon,
  • 3 counts of criminal discharge of a firearm recklessly at an occupied vehicle
  • and 1 count of aggravated endangering a child with a reckless situation to a child under 18.

All the charges are felonies.

The Johnson County public defender’s office has been assigned to represent Simmons at future court hearings.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Simmons remained in custody at the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in downtown Olathe on a $100,000 bond.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m.
