The hype is up for this West Bottoms brewery opening in Overland Park

This week, Stockyards Brewing Co. will open its first Johnson County taproom near 103rd and U.S. Highway 69.

A much-anticipated Kansas City-based beer brewer is finally nearing its Johnson County debut.

On Friday, Stockyards Brewing Co. will unveil its new brewery and taproom off 103rd Street and U.S. Highway 69 in Overland Park.

Stockyards Brewing is coming to 10310 Mastin St.

  • The brewery and taproom moved into a space on the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 69 and 103rd Street, at the Wycliff West shopping center in Overland Park.
  • There, the brewery will be near Korean chicken eatery 1981 K-Chicken and Brew Haha Coffeehouse.
  • Stockyards Brewing’s new space has been vacant for a while, but at different times in the past, it was home to a Piggly Wiggly grocery store and the National American University.
  • Once it opens, Stockyards Brewing’s regular hours will be 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 1 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to a release, the new Overland Park taproom will emulate Stockyards Brewing’s “signature cowboy spirit”.

Stockyards offers a variety of beers, from “Mexican-style” lagers to sours and seasonal selections.

Known for its American Western aesthetic, the brewery also offers bluegrass shows every Sunday.

The brewery’s new 25,000-square-foot space will feature one main taproom and another “family-style” room — the latter with two “first-come-first-serve” gathering tables and a reservable couch seating area for events.

Though brewing operations aren’t yet up and running at the Overland Park location, owner Greg Bland said they will be by the end of the year.

It’s been a long time coming for the brewery, which initially began the process of expanding into Overland Park in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It takes an almost unbearable amount of patience and grit to do something like this,” said Melissa VanGoethem, bar and events manager with Stockyards, via the release. “We’re really proud of what Stockyards is in the West Bottoms, and I am excited to see it grow in new ways.”

Stockyards Brewing Co. started in KCMO

About a decade ago, husband-and-wife duo Greg Bland and Meg Moore founded Stockyards’ first location in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, Missouri.

The brewery also has a location inside the Kansas City International airport.

Via the release, Bland voiced enthusiasm about getting to the point of expansion amidst a challenging time for many breweries and small businesses like his across the region and country.

“From musicians to regulars to staff to the collaborative KC beer industry, Stockyards is lucky to have become the best of all the people who make it what it is,” he said. “We don’t get to keep doing this without people far beyond us supporting it.”
