Leawood Police confirm two employees of a senior living facility exchanged gunfire early Tuesday morning.
Officers from Leawood and Overland Park responded to The Healthcare Resort of Leawood, 5401 W. 143rd St., at 3:31 a.m.
In a news release, Leawood Police Captain Jason Ahring said arriving officers learned that two male employees had been involved in a verbal argument that escalated.
“One employee fired multiple shots before the other employee returned fire,” Ahring said. “No residents of the facility were involved in the incident, and no one was struck by the gunfire.”
The initial response included Leawood firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics, who staged nearby as police searched for anyone potentially injured.
By 3:47 a.m., officers had completed a search of the area and determined that no one required medical attention.
Ahring said one employee remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The second employee left the scene before police arrived and was later located by Overland Park officers.
Ahring said the man located by Overland Park officers was taken into custody without further incident.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booking log shows that Leawood Police booked a man who was born in 1993 on a pending felony charge of aggravated assault. The man is listed as a resident of Kansas City, Missouri.
He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday afternoon.
“It is fortunate no one was hurt during this reckless incident,” Ahring said in the release. “We want to thank the Healthcare Resort of Leawood for cooperating with the investigation and the Overland Park Police Department for their assistance.”
